Horseshoe Bay Living

Best Restaurants in Austin

Four spots worth the drive from Lake LBJ, tested and loved by the Horseshoe Bay Living team.

An Hour from the Lake, a World of Flavor

Lake LBJ is hard to leave. But when hunger calls and you want something beyond the grill on your dock, Austin sits less than an hour down the road with one of the most exciting food scenes in the country. Here are four restaurants the Horseshoe Bay Living team keeps coming back to.

Bufalina

bufalinapizza.com

The best Neapolitan pizza in Austin, fired in a wood oven and served without pretense. Every pie comes out blistered and perfectly charred. They do not take reservations, and the wait has gotten longer as the secret has spread, but it is worth every minute. Order the margherita and whatever seasonal pie catches your eye.

Uchi

Your standards for sushi will change permanently after eating here. Uchi built its reputation on creative pairings that sound unlikely and taste inevitable. The machi cure and the maguro sashimi with goat cheese are signatures for a reason. Ranked among the top five sushi restaurants in America, and honestly, the ranking feels conservative.

Hopdoddy Burger Bar

These are not ordinary burgers. The Primetime is built from Texas Akaushi beef, brie cheese, caramelized onions, truffle aioli, arugula, and steak sauce. Quality ingredients, ground in-house, cooked to order. Hopdoddy has expanded across Texas, but the original South Congress location still has the best energy.

Amy's Ice Cream

amysicecreams.com

An Austin institution since 1984. The staff makes your order into a small performance, crushing and folding mix-ins right on the cold stone. The West Sixth Street location near Whole Foods HQ is our go-to. Rich, inventive flavors that change with the seasons, and a perfect excuse to walk off dinner.

Next time you are staying at one of our Lake LBJ properties and want a city night out, these four will not disappoint. An hour there, a great meal, and an hour back to the quiet of the lake.
