Read the reviews. Reviews give you a real sense of what a property is actually like, beyond the listing photos. Don't just glance at the overall rating score. Take the time to read individual posts, especially recent ones. Look for patterns in what guests praise and what they mention as drawbacks. A handful of honest, detailed reviews tells you far more than a perfect five-star average with no written feedback.

Talk to the homeowner. Don't be shy about asking lots of questions before you book. A good conversation builds trust on both sides and helps you know exactly what to expect when you arrive. Homeowners often have local knowledge that's genuinely useful: restaurant recommendations, the best boat ramp nearby, which grocery store to hit on the way in. These are tips you won't find in any guidebook.
